Autorità garante privacy. Attualmente il Garante è presieduto dal prof. Franco Pizzetti. Si tratta di un’autorità amministrativa indipendente istituita dalla legge n. 675 del 31 dicembre 1996 (cosiddetta legge sulla privacy), per assicurare la tutela dei diritti e delle libertà fondamentali e il rispetto della dignità nel trattamento dei dati personali. Con la redazione del Codice in materia di protezione dei dati personali (meglio noto come Codice della privacy), approvato con il Decreto Legislativo n. 196 del 30 giugno 2003, la legge n. 675/1996 è stata abrogata. L'attuale collegio si è insediato il 18 aprile 2005 ed è così composto: Francesco Pizzetti (Presidente), Giuseppe Chiaravalloti (Vice Presidente), Giuseppe Fortunato, Mauro Paissan.

Stefano Rodotà. Cattedra di diritto Civile a "La Sapienza" di Roma. Rodotà ha insegnato in molte università estere. He has been Visiting Scholar, Stanford School of Law and Visiting Fellow, All Souls’ College, Oxford. He was a representative at both the Italian Parliament (1979 to 1994) and the European Parliament, and a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (1983 to 1994). He was the Vice-Chairman of the Italian Chamber of Deputies. He was among the drafters of the OECD Privacy Guidelines in 1980. He is a member of the Legal Advisory Board for Market Information of the European Commission. He is currently President of the European Data Protection Working Party. He is a member of the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies. Mr. Rodotà has been recently designated to represent the Italian Government in the Group drafting the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. Mr. Rodotà has always been keen on the issue of human rights. He authored a number of publications and essays, including "Il terribile diritto. Studi sulla proprietà privata" (1990), "Questioni di bioetica" (1993), "Tecnologie e diritti" (1995), "Tecnopolitica" (1997), "Libertà e diritti in Italia" (1997), "Repertorio di fine secolo" (1999).
